Shaolin Philosophy and Meditation
About Buddhist Philosophy The main philosophy we teach at the Daolin Centre is "Shaolin Buddhism". Shaolin is unlike any other form of Buddhism and it includes elements of other Eastern philosophies such as Daoism. It sits within the Mahayana school of Buddhism, more specifically Shaolin is a type of Ch'an (Known as Zen in Japan). Shaolin Buddhism uses meditation as a key part of its path to awareness and prizes this higher than scriptural knowledge. Meditation can be practised by anyone at any time and gives great benefits to the mind and body. Our classes involve seated, standing and moving meditation. Ch'an meditation brings your mind into the present and helps you to experience an awareness that can improve your mental and physical well-being greatly. It also relaxes the mind and body which can help to reduce blood pressure, lower your pulse and metabolic rate. Meditation can be used as a tool to remove some of the natural stresses and strains that get put on our lives. Aside from the meditation, the emphasis of our course is the philosophical elements of Buddhism and Daoism. These are simple ideas that can be practised regardless of your religion or spiritual beliefs. Many people around the world who study Buddhism and Daoism follow their own faith alongside, in China this is mostly Christianity and Islam but the ideas of Buddhism have some relevance to just about everyone. The Shaolin philosophy is very open and relaxed, at all times it asks that you question and confirm all things within your own mind. Questions and discussion is actively encouraged within the class. The course will also look at the most common Buddhism concepts and ideas (such as Karma) and explain their relevance to Western Buddhism and the Shaolin way. Shaolin Buddhism Centre The courses at the Shaolin Buddhist Centre are suitable for complete beginners as well as the more experienced and everyone is welcome at our centre.
